When the Pleiades and the wind in the grass are no longer a part of the human spirit, a part of very flesh and bone, man becomes, as it were a kind of cosmic outlaw, having neither the completeness and integrity of the animal nor the birthright of a true humanity.
We need another and a wiser and perhaps a more mystical concept of animals. Remote from universal nature, and living by complicated artifice, man in civilization surveys the creature through the glass of his knowledge and sees thereby a feather magnified and the whole image in distortion.
We patronize them for their incompleteness, for their tragic fate of having taken form so far below ourselves. And therein we err, and greatly err. For the animal shall not be measured by man.
In a world older and more complete than ours they move finished and complete, gifted with extensions of the senses we have lost or never attained, living by voices we shall never hear.
They are not brethren, they are not underlings; they are other nations, caught with ourselves in the net of life and time, fellow prisoners of the splendour and travail of the earth.

I hope this finds you and yours well and at peace. It’s been over 2 months since I last shared with you. Life here has been, well, eye opening. So much has happened in just two months! I have so much that I want to share with you concerning aging animals, behavior, healing, animal companions, energy, and conscious communication!
But not today.
Considering the current state of affairs around the world I was inspired to share something that I believe we all need right now: Nature
How’s your nature-intake-level? Are you practicing the self care habit of unplugging from nightmarish news, and enjoying a hiatus of sensational social media? I am. And it feels frigging GREAT.
Today we are less connected to Nature than ever before in human history. Our busy lifestyles and hectic schedules don’t allow us the freedom to find rest, relaxation, and rejuvenation in nature.
Yet that is exactly what we need.
My Cherokee ancestors knew that being in tune with our Mother Earth is one of the most powerful tools we have. Being in nature allows us to develop a more fulfilling, peaceful, and enlightened life. Being In Tune with Nature allows for a deeper connection with all Life – including our animal companions and our fellow earth travelers.
If there is any wisdom running through my life now, in my walking on this earth, it came from listening in the Great Silence to the stones, trees, space, the wild animals, to the pulse of all life as my heartbeat.
So why aren’t we out there on a daily basis? Are we making excuses for why we can’t be outside? Are we disconnected from the purest source of nourishment? What takes our focus and time? Have we forgotten what nature has to offer us all?
We have never truly “lost” our connection to nature; we have forgotten how to engage it. When we fail to have reverence for nature and connect with the energies of all that nature encompasses we lose something valuable – our intimate connection with each other, with wildlife, with the Earth, and with All That Is.
Nature is a refuge. She is solace. A teacher. A healer. When we connect with nature we are connected to All Life. We are open to receiving. We are able to giving. We find balance. We are open to discovery, learning, healing, and enlightenment.
The reason is quite simple: We are part of nature; we are not separate from it.
But we often feel so disconnected.
When I appear to lose my connection, I appear to be separate from All that Is.
But when I am in nature I Am tuned in, tapped in, and turned on!
I become consciously awake.
Then I remember.
I laugh at my forgetfulness.
I give thanks.
Thanks for remembering the Truth.
I Am not *Part* of Nature.
I Am nature.
She is me.
The roaring winds
The turbulent seas
The peaceful sunset
The strong trees
They are me.
What I do to nature,
I am doing to me.
You are nature.
Nature is you.
All that you see is you.
How we treat nature
How we view nature
How we give to nature
How we take from nature
It’s all a reflection of ourselves.
We do not exist independently
We are not separate from everything else.
There is no “else”.
We are not separate from anyONE.
That belief, my fellow earth travelers, is the illusion.
A trick of the ego.
Harmful in every way.
We have forgotten the Truth.
But we can remember.
GO into nature.
Listen. Feel. Know.
Sit in silence.
Let Nature heal you.
Let Nature inspire you.
Let Nature show you.
Be open to the miracles and magic.

Happy Tuesday! Hello Summer! And how the heck are we in August already?!? Gah!
I have not had the opportunity to sit down and write to you about the tools, tips, and transformation from before, during, and after our Big Move out West because we have been going nonstop since I last wrote you. And we have had some major life challenges as well. But I promise, those posts will come. It takes a lot of time and effort to share in detail with you when it comes to behavior modification, energy work, and inter-species communication. When I have the time, you will hear all about it!
But when it comes to quickly sharing good news with the world, I cannot contain myself! Which brings me to the point of this post: Gratitude.
(I will give myself 20 min to write this … And the clock starts NOW!)
We can get so wrapped up in our daily lives that we forget to see the good. When we encounter minor and major frustrations we can easily overlook the miracles and magic, and small successes that are happening right in front of us.
It’s easy to overlook the positive side of every challenge and frustration. It’s easy to focus on the negative. So much crud and crap is being shared, talked about, and focused on. There is so much negativity in the news. And too many crazy people are receiving the spotlight. Focus around the world is focused on fear and negativity.
Where’s the Good Stuff?
There are GREAT things happening everywhere! There are amazing things happening in our homes! But we often don’t see them. We are focusing on the fearful, scary, or frustrating parts.
Where are we focused when things get a bit challenging in our homes? Where does our mind wander when we (or our animal companions) are having a hard time? Are we exploring all of the options available? Are we practicing patience? Are we staying in gratitude? Are we anticipating a positive outcome? Are we recognizing small successes?
Most of the time we are not.
But we can change that! We can condition ourselves to see small successes. We can learn to look at the highlights, instead of the low points. It takes practice and a little willingness to see things from a higher perspective, and to view the Big Picture. Once we start this practice, our lives with our animal companions will change dramatically, for the better.

Be In Gratitude
Even in the lowest moments in life I can find something to be grateful for. I can even find a way to laugh. I have learned to do this through practice.
This tool has changed my life in more ways than I can explain. I am now keenly aware of how deeply my moods and attitude directly affect everyone around me, especially my animal companions. Whether it’s during a training session, grooming them, cleaning around them, or hanging out as a family, they are very in tune with what I am going through.
We may not see it on the surface, but our animal companions are sponges for our emotions and moods. They are literally soaking up all that we are sending out. And many animals will reflect back whatever we are sending out. It’s taken me many years to recognize this.
These days I am very aware of what I am transmitting.
Now I catch myself when I start to fall into a downward spiral of frustration or fear. If I am feeling angry, frustrated, overwhelmed, sad, or afraid, I will find one thing that I am grateful for. I say it out loud. When I do this I can literally feel a shift. I can feel myself lighten up and feel better. Then I am able to focus on more things that I am grateful for.
Once I am in gratitude I am able to look for solutions. I am more willing to look at the circumstance from another perspective. I am able to stay grounded. This helps me to steer clear of fear, frustration, or even reactivity. Sometimes I am able to even laugh!
Once I do this, whatever I was so upset about starts to fade from fear or frustration and transform into trust and clarity. Gratitude overtakes the monster mental scene I have created. I can see more clearly. Then I am ready to move forward and face the challenge with (a little more) grace and ease.

There have been a lot of challenges recently for our family, and for our animal companions, but there were so many Good Things that have come out of every challenge. For example, Hocus’s reactivity issues seem to be fading fast. Mr. Beaux, our 17 year young feline, continues to amaze me in every way. We are all embracing health and happiness, and setting aside all kinds of fears.
Life is Good (because we continue to see it that way.)

We found an incredible all feline (cats only) veterinary specialist near our new home.
After Mr. Beaux had 3 teeth removed and jaw surgery, I became wholly aware of how much pain he had been in (and hiding) for a long time. This pain contributed to his lack of interest in food, and subsequent weight loss. (And NOT because “he is a picky eater!”) He is eating like a champ now! … More to come on this important cat misconception later.
Someone near and dear to me was diagnosed with Cancer, but all we are focusing on is perfect health and a complete healing. All we can see is someone who is free of cancer.
I was reminded how important and healing laughter is when I found this Instagram account and couldn’t stop laughing at the pet & wildlife ones.
Mr. Beaux reminded us all, once again, of two things: 1.Animals are never doing things out of spite; all behavior serves a purpose. It’s our job as their guardian to help them by becoming a “pet detective”. 2. Litter boxes must be adjusted carefully for cats, post surgery.
I got back into meditation AND stopped feeling guilty about how much I procrastinate after I discovered this amazing video.

There are many reasons to have a travel kit prepared for your animal companions: from evacuation during an emergency, to vet trips, to a day at the beach. But, often we don’t think of all the items we need to include in that kit. In the United States alone, 61% of animal guardians travel with their pets and 33% travel often with their animals. Hotels are recognizing this and offering some really innovative packages for anyone on vacation or having to evacuate with their animal family members.
Did you know that September is National Disaster Preparedness Month? As September comes to an end and we welcome October, I wanted to share some easy tips that you can do to prepare in the event that an emergency strikes your home. This is the perfect time for animal guardians to take some simple – but critical – steps to keep their feathered, scaly and furry companions safe.
More than 396 million pets reside in 68 percent of American households. A poll, conducted after Hurricane Katrina, found that 61 percent of animal guardians will not evacuate if they cannot bring their animal family members with them. So, if you are one of those people then you need to read this. It’s vital that youcreate a pet emergency kit that is available to quickly grab and go.
A basic pet disaster kit includes:
Food and water for at least five days for each pet, bowls, and a manual can opener if you are packing canned pet food. People need at least one gallon of water per person per day. While your pet may not need that much, keep an extra gallon on hand if your pet has been exposed to chemicals or flood waters and needs to be rinsed.
Medications and medical records stored in a waterproof container and a first aid kit. A pet first aid book is also a good idea.
Cat litter box, litter, litter scoop, and garbage bags to collect all pets’ waste.
Sturdy leashes, harnesses, and carriers to transport pets safely and to ensure that your pets can’t escape. Carriers should be large enough to allow your pet to stand comfortably, turn around, and lie down. (Your pet may have to stay in the carrier for hours at a time.) Be sure to have a secure cage with no loose objects inside it to accommodate smaller pets—who may also need blankets or towels for bedding and warmth as well as special items, depending on their species.
Current photos of you with your pets and descriptions of your pets to help others identify them in case you and your pets become separated—and to prove that they are yours once you’re reunited.
Written information about your pets’ feeding schedules, medical conditions, and behavior issues along with the name and number of your veterinarian in case you have to board your pets or place them in foster care.
Even if you are evacuating, it doesn’t have to be stressful. We used to jokingly refer to them as “Hurrications”. This helpful infographic from PetSafe is an excellent reminder of the basic necessities, looks at some of the most pet-friendly places in the nation, and gives you some great guidelines on traveling with your feathered, scaly, or furry family members!
When disaster strikes, the same rules that apply to people apply to our animal companions – preparation makes all the difference. Remember, if it’s not safe for you, then it’s not safe for your animals. Be a conscious companion and be prepared!
